Design from the measurement point outward
Data acquisition is not only a question of getting a device online. The project needs to identify the source of each value, how it is represented, how often it is needed, who owns the data and where it will be used. This applies equally to sensors, meters, PLC registers, remote I/O and legacy instruments.
A typical architecture may run from field data to remote I/O or a serial interface, then through a serial device server or gateway to industrial Ethernet, and onward to SCADA, MES, a historian or an IIoT platform. The exact components depend on the interfaces and protocols confirmed for the project.
Keep serial and Ethernet roles explicit
RS485 and Modbus RTU equipment is common in metering, instrumentation and control cabinets. A compatible serial connection product can provide an Ethernet path, while an industrial switch creates the structured cabinet network for Ethernet endpoints. The connection method, addressing approach and protocol configuration need agreement before commissioning.
Where a gateway is used, document the source-device settings, data mapping responsibility, Ethernet route and destination-platform expectation. A gateway does not automatically make inconsistent source data suitable for an application; the complete data model needs review by the responsible project team.
Test the path from source to destination
Installation preparation should cover sensor or instrument records, terminal and cable labels, cabinet power, grounding, network address ownership and the expected data route. During commissioning, verify source behaviour, local communication, the cabinet network and then platform reception in order.
If factory testing or shipment inspection is required, agree a realistic device-level scope. It can support verification of requested model, interface, basic function, accessories and documentation, while final acceptance depends on the completed field installation and platform configuration.
