Design from the measurement point outward

Data acquisition is not only a question of getting a device online. The project needs to identify the source of each value, how it is represented, how often it is needed, who owns the data and where it will be used. This applies equally to sensors, meters, PLC registers, remote I/O and legacy instruments.

A typical architecture may run from field data to remote I/O or a serial interface, then through a serial device server or gateway to industrial Ethernet, and onward to SCADA, MES, a historian or an IIoT platform. The exact components depend on the interfaces and protocols confirmed for the project.

Keep serial and Ethernet roles explicit

RS485 and Modbus RTU equipment is common in metering, instrumentation and control cabinets.
